PROJECT SUMMARY:

This condo near the beach is a weekend and summer getaway for a professional couple in their fifties. After owning their condo for more than 20 years, the couple decided it was the right time for a more modern kitchen that better reflected their personalities and lifestyles. The husband, an avid body surfer, wanted to make some changes to the kitchen design to better accommodate his arrival home from the beach in full wetsuit attire. To accomplish the clients' desires, the design approach for this small space needed to be focused and innovative. Space planning was essential to the success of the layout. Appliances were selected at smaller scales than usual and cabinetry was kept as minimal and spare as possible. Creative storage methods keep the space sleek and contemporary.

The resulting kitchen design achieves a casual feeling in line with the condo's role as a getaway destination, while also communicating the homeowners' fresh, modern and uncomplicated point of view.

The original kitchen reflects the design style of previous decades. Cramped and dark, it was hard to use, even just occasionally.

The design of the new kitchen conveys a playful personality with limited space and a definitive lack of fuss. Various design details, such as the backsplash tile, the cabinetry, and the track lighting, are based on horizontal lines, achieving a sense of balance and unity.

The inspiration for this appealing color palette was found in a painting by one of the clients' favorite artists, who specializes in works that interpret the colorful beauty found by the ocean.
