PROJECT SUMMARY:

A young professional couple with challenging careers and busy social lives wanted to create a dream kitchen in their Carmel Valley home as a respite from their hectic schedules. They love to cook and entertain frequently and needed more open space and functionality to comfortably welcome friends and family into their environment. They also wanted their kitchen to have a more natural connection with their large backyard and patio.

Structural changes created more visual harmony with the outdoors and with the living and dining areas of the home and added a significant amount of light to the kitchen. Colors and materials were selected to echo the lush greenery outdoors. A carefully planned layout encompasses space for all the appliances expected in a modern kitchen, along with a home for the couple's large collection of cookbooks and efficient areas for prep and cooking. The couple now invite guests into their dream kitchen to share the room's warm, naturally artistic vibe and its welcoming, open space.

The original kitchen featured outdated materials and a cluttered layout. The kitchen felt separate from the rest of the home.

Light flows in the open and airy space of the new kitchen design. Colorful materials and natural woods bring energy and life to the space. Widening the doorway to the living and dining areas created a more open floor plan and brought abundant light to the kitchen. The cherry hardwood floors used elsewhere in the home were added to the kitchen to establish visual unity.

For a couple who love to cook and entertain, the original kitchen was uninspiring and frustrating. The room was dark and the layout was inefficient, including a small island with insufficient room for preparing large meals.

A streamlined layout makes prep and cooking a joy. The kitchen has two sinks, including the apron front stainless steel sink at right, for maximum functionality. The floating shelf above the sink offers room for displaying treasured objects.

The new open layout was carefully planned for efficiency and ease while cooking and entertaining. The cabinetry was custom built to accommodate the client's height. A built-in 48" cooktop on the island allows the homeowners to prep and cook a meal while interacting with their guests.

A gleaming tile wall, with six variations on green joined in a cross reed pattern, was created in glass tile made by a local artisan. The wall was built with concave and converse tiles, resulting in a wave-like effect that captures and reflects light differently throughout the day.
