PROJECT SUMMARY:

After owning their 40-year old home for more than 15 years, these clients found themselves in an environment that no longer suited their lifestyle. Their children had grown from babies to teenagers, while their parents had aged and were coming to stay for longer visits. With family togetherness central to the clients' values, the new kitchen was designed to be open to a remodeled great room and adjacent family room. The new kitchen design is influenced by the clients' desire for a modern space that is beautiful and sophisticated, but unpretentious and well-suited for family life. The design is an artful interpretation of California Coastal aesthetics, combined with contemporary notes and softer elements inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement.

The original home was designed with a clumsy series of levels so that the kitchen looked down onto the living room.

In the newly expanded area, a recess with indirect lighting defines the kitchen while bringing additional light and comfort to the space. The dining area is now open to the kitchen as well, further enhancing the family's time together during meals.

In the existing kitchen, appliances were outdated and the awkward layout was not conducive for cooking or sharing the space.

In the new kitchen, the precise and thoughtful selection and placement of appliances allows for optimal functionality. Because the kitchen was built to be as open as possible to the rest of the living area, walls were kept to a minimum.

The original kitchen was visually uninspiring and no longer functional for the clients' evolving family.

The kitchen now stands alone as a memorable interpretation of California Coastal design while effortlessly integrating with the rest of the open living area. Three generations gather together here to enjoy each other and their appealing new surroundings.
