PROJECT SUMMARY:

For a client with an enthusiastic appreciation of retro design, this sunny ode to kitchens of the past is a cheerful and comforting retreat for today. Bright, optimistic yellow sets the tone, with retro-inspired appliances in buttery yellow chosen as key elements of the design. The client wanted a kitchen that creatively expressed her fun, unconventional taste while providing all the modern conveniences of a contemporary home. Space was borrowed from an existing office to provide more open area and easier navigation in the kitchen. A generous apron-front farm sink gleams with clean white enameled cast iron and is outfitted with a rare retro faucet with spray and scrub brush attachments. Black trim against the yellow ceramic tile countertops defines the kitchen's lines. Simple maple cabinetry painted white with black ceramic knobs provides a modern level of storage. Playful positioning of contrasting tiles on the floor presents a modern, quirky interpretation of the traditional checkerboard pattern in this classic kitchen with an original point of view.

2014 ASID Award 2nd place - Kitchens Before 1

A cramped corner of the original kitchen shows how difficult it was to organize the space and maintain an uncluttered appearance in the room.

The flow and navigation of the kitchen is significantly improved with a streamlined layout, while counters were designed at heights planned for accessibility.

2014 ASID Award 2nd place - Kitchens Before 2

A standard white refrigerator in the existing kitchen was covered in some of the client's vast magnet collection. She wanted only yellow retro-inspired appliances in her new kitchen.

The visual energy of the new kitchen is lively, fun and full of the client's personality. Cheerful yellow hues dominate the room, with retro appliances setting the tone for the design.

2014 ASID Award 2nd place - Kitchens Before 3

In the existing kitchen, dated cabinetry dominated the room. Appliances were old and clunky. The room lacked any kind of warmth or personality.

Storage in the new kitchen is abundant and versatile. The design achieves the distinct personality the client desired. Her kitchen is now a true expression of her individual taste where she feels inspired and comfortable.
