PROJECT SUMMARY:

Our clients plan to enjoy their retirement years in this La Jolla Shores home, originally a cute but small bungalow in a very desirable neighborhood just a few blocks from the beach. The homeowners are people who love contemporary design and it was important to them to truly love their space. They had a dream floor plan in mind and wanted to live in beautiful, inspiring surroundings. The new home was built on one level encompassing a central living space and an outdoor area with a private Zen garden. Each material was carefully selected during the remodel, with the clients' attentive participation. The exterior is a high grade cedar siding with zinc (which will weather nicely next to the ocean) covering the entry for privacy. Inside, an expansive open area encompasses an entryway with custom niches to display art and collectibles, a living and dining area, and a dynamic kitchen. The whole home remodel also included two master bedroom suites and guest quarters. Once a humble bungalow, this home is now a stunning realization of California Contemporary design.

2014 ASID Award 2nd Place - Whole Home Before 1

The existing home was a small, standard bungalow. The clients wanted to live in a more modern, interesting environment with an emphasis on contemporary design.

2014 ASID Award 2nd Place - Whole Home After 1

The striking contemporary exterior is now composed of stucco balanced by high grade cedar siding selected with random widths to convey a subtly unstructured character. Simple landscaping is at home in the beachside neighborhood.

2014 ASID Award 2nd Place - Whole Home Before 2

The original interior was small and dark. The clients wanted to live in more open surroundings while keeping their home on one level.

Massive glass doors designed with innovative technology open with the touch of a finger onto the courtyard and private Zen garden, dramatically improving light and circulation. The layout creates visual unity between indoor and outdoor living.

2014 ASID Award 2nd Place - Whole Home Before 3

The original kitchen was small and cluttered, demonstrating little in the way of style. There was limited space for welcoming guests.

2014 ASID Award 2nd Place - Whole Home After 3

The new kitchen's spacious layout inspires entertaining. In an open space imbued with natural light, glossy white against warm woods and earthy tile communicates refined modernity.

2014 ASID Award 2nd Place - Whole Home Before 4

A backyard area in the original home was small and uninviting. The design of the home limited access to the outdoors and did little to enhance indoor/outdoor living.

2014 ASID Award 2nd Place - Whole Home After 4

The outdoor area now beckons with a dining table, water feature, BBQ area and an inviting L-shaped bench in front of a leafy canopy of bamboo.
