PROJECT SUMMARY:

This vibrant kitchen in a mid-century modern home with stunning water views needed a significant transformation to meet the needs of a young couple with a small child. The unexpected color palette is inspired by the first piece of art the couple bought for their baby daughter. Energy and color infuse their new space with a fresh modern attitude grounded with sophisticated architectural elements. The kitchen was planned with an open design to integrate with the rest of the living area.

This kitchen vibrates with exciting shades of orange, green and turquoise. The juxtaposition of colors and textures inspires while providing ultra-modern function and style. Great care was taken in the composition of the ceiling, with three layers built to create a striking architectural element as an interesting design transition between the kitchen and the open living area. The island is a fresh take on pastel-inspired bright hues with visual planes of orange and green against the earthy wood defining the kitchen in inspiring and energetic space.

2015 CotY Contractor Award for Residential Kitchen - Before 1

The original kitchen was dark and claustrophobic, with awkward navigation.

The kitchen now celebrates the natural surroundings of the home. A cooktop in the island is oriented toward the home's views, while an innovative ceiling mounted hood with a reflective surface gleams above.

The existing kitchen was corralled into one corner of the home and cluttered with countertops and cabinetry.

The new design transitions from the lower ceiling in the kitchen to the open living area with a series of carefully considered architectural elements in the ceiling. The new space is dramatically more open and integrated with the rest of the home.

2015 CotY Contractor Award for Residential Kitchen - Before 3

In the home's original layout, what was one room seemed like separate areas because of the outdated period design and walls blocking each line of sight.

The kitchen and dining area are now seamlessly integrated with the rest of the living area, creating an open, modern mood. Horizontal lines serve to underscore the openness of the space.

2015 CotY Contractor Award for Residential Kitchen - Before 4

The existing kitchen neglected the natural beauty surrounding this home with its stunning water views.

2015 CotY Contractor Award for Residential Kitchen - After 4

From the vantage point of the island cooktop, one can easily interact with guests and enjoy the lovely views. The island is defined by a soffit accented by other architectural elements built into the ceiling to delineate space and bring sophisticated modern style to the design.
