PROJECT SUMMARY:

The professional yet free-spirited couple who own this mountaintop home wanted to replicate the feeling of an outdoor shower they experienced in a favorite resort during one of their many Caribbean trips together. Built in 1962 at the top of Mt. Helix, the home features stunning natural views and unusual architecture. The eclectic interior is decorated with works of art the homeowners have collected and a series of sculptural works created by the husband. Their new master bathroom had to reflect the couple's individualistic lifestyle while incorporating the concept of both an indoor and outdoor shower.

This memorable master bath evokes the experience of a Caribbean destination resort with a contemporary aesthetic. Connected indoor and outdoor showers and the design's emphasis on openness appeal to the imagination. Colors and materials throughout the room express an artistic spirit, while careful space planning and storage options provide a high level of modern functionality. Whether luxuriating in the sumptuous indoor shower or in the open air of the outdoor shower, this inviting space creates an unforgettable adventure for all the senses.

Shag carpeting, a raised tub, and a very small shower were holdovers from the 1970s. The room felt dated and dark and was hard to keep clean.

The new space is refreshingly open and airy, with an emphasis on welcoming in nature and reflecting light off interesting surfaces. The dark purple wall visually frames the view of the hillside forest just beyond the outdoor shower.

The original shower was strangely small given the amount of space in the room. The clients and their children are all unusually tall, making the scale seem even more awkward.

The new indoor shower was designed in luxuriously grand scale, punctuated by a column of shimmering glass tile. Placing the showerhead and controls on the column sustains a clean, uncluttered look in the space.

The outdoor area seen from the existing bath was a dismal and neglected area with little to attract the eye.

The unused outdoor space was transformed into an outdoor shower where the clients can relive their experience in a Caribbean resort with the modern functionality of contemporary design.

The natural surroundings of the home are quite beautiful but were ignored and obstructed in the original design of the master bathroom.

A sliding door now connects the luxurious indoor shower to a spacious outdoor shower. This fresh and unusual design creates an incredible sense of openness, circulation and light.
