PROJECT SUMMARY:

The owner of a large home with expansive grounds wanted to dramatically change her outdoor space to welcome large groups of friends and family for frequent festive occasions. The homeowner has Sicilian roots and is committed to community involvement, loves to host large fundraisers and celebrations, and derives great joy from gardening. She decided to remove the tennis courts on her property and use the space to expand.

After the significant challenge of removing clay tennis courts to get to the soil, the new outdoor area now integrates a main kitchen along with a wine tasting room, a catering kitchen, his and her bathrooms, an outdoor kitchen, shaded outdoor areas, a greenhouse, a garden and fruit trees, and other amenities, all designed with the spirit of a Sicilian villa. The outdoor living space graciously integrates with the main home and with its surrounding neighborhood, encompassing all the elements of its grand scale with harmonious flow. The space provides a sense of open expansiveness during large events while also feeling private and serene during quiet times. The outdoor living space feels as if it has always belonged with the home and the client loves the way the space communicates her heritage and her lifestyle.

The existing space was expansive but was not visually integrated with the home or designed for entertaining.

The exterior of the main home, shown here on the left, was completely redone to visually integrate the main home with the outdoor living space. The space is designed to accommodate indoor/outdoor living and entertaining on a grand scale as well as private, relaxed times.

For a client who often entertains large groups, the original space was spacious but lacking in thoughtful design.

Three trellises were built in different areas of the outdoor living space to provide stylish shade for hot weather days and define areas for eating and entertaining. Built from Douglas Fir with a walnut shell distressing, the trellises communicate the rustic authenticity the client desired.

At night, the new space often welcomes hundreds of guests into its welcoming expanse. Colorful tiles on the sweeping stairs are a design element repeated in the cabana kitchen, the outdoor kitchen, the alcove for St. Anthony, and in several other areas throughout the outdoor space.

Throughout the considerable space, areas of definition were designed to establish a sense of place for relaxing and socializing. The lighting under the outdoor kitchen's countertop emphasizes the rustic beauty of the bar's stone.

The outdoor kitchen is fully outfitted with a range, warming drawer, wine refrigerator, kegerator, sink, ice maker and more. Built for heavy functional use, it is also a beautiful extension of the visual appeal in the space.

Stacked stone, textured woods, hand-painted tiles and wrought iron chandeliers balance with stainless steel appliances to create a welcoming, luxurious space with a massive island as the central gathering point in the open space.

The greenhouse to the left of the pergola is a space for the client to tend to treasured plantings, a beloved hobby that reminds her of her gardens in Provence. The garden has been carefully planned to suit needs for beauty, aroma and cooking.

In a grand space with a distinctive style, special attention was given to create multiple intimate gathering points for conversation and contemplation. It is a space that is at once impressive and memorable, private and personal. The design is a deep expression of the client's history and passions.
