SDHGJune2017Cover-lgWe are excited to announce today that San Diego Home/Garden Lifestyles has awarded JDR with the prestigious Kitchen of the Year honor and selected our work for the cover of their 26th Annual Kitchens of the Year June issue.

In a historical La Jolla home, the kitchen was transformed to enhance family life while honoring the essential character of the design. A couple with a close and active family life who enjoy welcoming their children and grandchildren into their home needed a substantial update to their existing kitchen. Their 1939 Colonial-style home was designed by acclaimed architect Thomas Shepherd, well known for his work in La Jolla. It was important to the clients to respect the original nature of their home while significantly increasing storage, improving navigation, and creating a stylish kitchen and breakfast nook with a more spacious feeling.

rehm2The new design honors the home’s classic American sensibility with a modern approach. To create a more open and unified space, existing beams were pushed up for a higher ceiling and upper cabinetry blocking the view from the kitchen to the breakfast nook was removed. Custom cabinetry in crisp white provides abundant organized storage. A deep navy blue walnut cabinet with intricate detailing conceals the refrigerator and side pantries while establishing an impressive focal point. Fresh and inviting, this Rehm1kitchen now brings ease, comfort, and liveliness to every family gathering.

We are thrilled to have our work recognized by San Diego Home/Garden Lifestyles Magazine! See more about the Kitchen of the Year here.

JDRWinnerBadges_2017All

We are excited to present the winners of the 8th Annual JDR Industry Blogger Awards! We had another incredible contest this year and, as always, we were inspired by the many talented bloggers who participated with enthusiasm.

Architecture winner Samantha Markham of The Aspiring Architect plans to donate a portion of her winnings by holding a contest on her own blog for architecture students and aspiring young professionals. The winner(s) will each receive a portion of the prize money to help pay for educational expenses. Samantha said she had an amazing outpouring of support from family, friends, followers, and co-workers during the contest, “I was super excited to be a part of the JDR Industry Blogger Awards. Just to be nominated was a huge honor! My readers were also very excited and supportive. The contest introduced me to bloggers in my field and in other professions.”

The winner in the Interior Design category, Tina of The Enchanted Home, is donating her $500 prize to an important, and personal, cause: “I will donate my winnings to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. A relative is there now, only 11 years old, being treated for leukemia. I cannot think of a better way to spend this money than to help fight this horrible disease.”

Remodeling category winner, Jeffrey Johnson of Jeffrey Design, thought the contest was exciting and relevant. “Bloggers have a passion for sharing stories with their audience,” Jeffrey said, “We should be advocates for supporting other bloggers and how we all encourage, inspire, and energize our readers.”

There is one winning blog in each category: Architecture, Construction Business, Remodeling, Interior Design, Green, and Microblog. Winners receive a $500 prize and a JDR Blogger Awards Winner badge for display on their blog.

It’s Tax Day Tomorrow! A Home Office Makes Meeting Deadlines Easier.

office1Even when it’s delayed, as it was this year for the Easter holiday, tax day is a certainty. If you have a well-designed home office any task from tax preparation to recipe collecting is more organized and enjoyable. Remember these strategies when planning an office in your whole home remodel:

Plan Ahead
At the beginning of the design process, discuss your needs and desires for your office3space with a team of professional designers. You’ll want to consider how often you work at home, how much storage you need for files and supplies, and any additional work surfaces you’ll need in addition to your desk. Space planning will take into account how you use technology, whether or not you need an area for visiting clients, and other factors related to how you will use your office. It’s all about planning for comfort and efficiency.

office2Work Efficiently
Studies show that thoughtful lighting helps minimize fatigue and increase energy. Natural light is essential for productive and efficient workdays, while layers of lighting inside take over once the sun goes down. Also critical to your peace of mind in a home office is a space planned for ease of navigation and flow. The smaller the space, the more critical this element of the design.

With more people working from home than ever before, home offices have evolved in imaginative ways. Your home office should be a place that works well for you and the tasks at hand while integrating seamlessly with your home’s overall design. Collaborating with our unified team of architects, designers, and construction professionals, your home office can be an appealing and efficient space that expresses your unique personal style.

organic2Maintaining a relationship with the natural world by integrating woods, hides, fur, and woven textures into interiors is a top trend our design team sees growing in 2017. Handmade, organic, and natural elements make homes feel more comfortable and welcoming. Here are some ideas for your whole home remodel:

Space Planning
An organic mood begins with a clean and simple layout filled with abundant light. Connecting your space to its surroundings with the orientation of windows and glass doors emphasizes a feeling of unity with nature.

organic1Color
Neutral colors and hues based on earth elements harmonize your interior with the natural world. Soft white walls paired with rustic woods are signatures of the organic style. Accessories in more colorful shades play a role as well, popping up in handmade glassware and pottery, rugs, pillows, and wall hangings.

organic3Texture
Noticeable texture is one of the appealing features of organic, handmade design. The compelling surfaces of woods, clay, brick, stones, and fabric add to a sense of warmth and authenticity.

Nature continually surprises with new inspiration for the home! Working with a unified team of architects, designers and construction professionals, you will discover myriad possibilities for embracing organic and handmade style in your whole home remodel.
