If remodeling your kitchen is on your mind lately, consider one of the recent trends we’ve noticed – round tables growing in popularity as the dining table of choice. Families of every size are deciding to place more importance on eating together, particularly when several generations are living in the same home. Families with children are especially interested in making meals together at the kitchen table a priority. Studies have shown that kids who eat sit-down meals with the family on a regular basis develop better communication skills and study habits and are less likely to drink alcohol, take drugs, or get depressed. The ritual takes practice to be effective – study participants report that the more nights spent at the dinner table, the better the experience for everyone.

Round tables, which naturally allow everyone to face each other, bring a sense of intimacy and togetherness to the family meal. Seemingly small decisions like choosing a round table over a rectangular one for your kitchen remodel are what make the difference between bland design and design that brings energy and pleasure to everyday living. Our designers guide you toward creating a kitchen that suits your individual lifestyle and values, a custom designed room that you and your family can appreciate for a lifetime.

When our clients decided it was time to remodel the Carlsbad home they bought years ago in anticipation of retirement, they were still living in Chicago. They learned about Jackson Design and Remodeling’s expertise with relocation and second homes and trusted us from afar throughout the remodeling process. Their Carlsbad home had been used as a rental property in the interim between their purchase and their decision to remodel it to fit their current needs. The couple wanted to accommodate their plans to stay in their home through retirement and welcome visiting adult children.

Applying the principles of universal design, this Carlsbad whole home remodel included the addition of a master suite on the ground level and new bedrooms on the upper level to welcome visiting relatives and guests. Universal design simply means design that works for everyone. Using a combination of careful planning and thoughtful design, decisions such as non-step entryways, wider doorways and passages, extra floor space, adaptable lighting, along with details such as easy to use handles and switches, immediately enhance universal design while adapting to any aesthetic.

Homeowners sometimes think that they must be present during their remodel to monitor each step. This is not necessary when you work with Jackson Design and Remodeling. Our team of professionals is adept at the communication, documentation and build process that allows a homeowner to be out of town, yet count on a successful and satisfying remodeling experience.

Our clients are now living in their stunning Carlsbad home with an ocean view and fresh coastal air in an environment that has been created to thoroughly fit their lifestyle today.

Todd Jackson, President and CEO of Jackson Design and Remodeling, was recently featured in a USA Today article about the growing trend toward mother-in-law suites in home remodeling. According to the article, about 3.5 million American households last year included adult children and their parents, a number expected to rise as the country ages and baby boomers move into retirement. If this sounds like your family, working with an experienced design build remodeling team can help make the extended family transition stress-free and successful.

From the USA Today article:
“…To accommodate the growing demand, AARP teamed up with the home builders’ association to create a designation for Certified Aging in Place Specialists, who are trained in designing and modifying buildings for the elderly. About 3,000 builders, contractors, remodelers and architects have been certified.

One is Todd Jackson, CEO of San Diego’s Jackson Design and Remodeling, which handled the room addition at McCann’s home.

“There’s both a physical component and a sensitivity side to these projects. The family needs to take that into account,” said Jackson, who noted that aging parents may be reluctant to move into their children’s homes, and may worry about losing their independence. “The transition will go over a lot better if you bring the parent into the conversation,” said Jackson. “Ask them: ‘What do you need?’ ‘What color do you want?‘” Read the whole article here.

If you, like many other families today, are considering bringing your extended family together by remodeling your home, Jackson Design and Remodeling can help. With our carefully considered design process and extensive experience with situations just like yours, we can help you provide a safe, comfortable and beautiful space for a loved one in your home. The mother-in-law suites section of our website provides guidance about the factors to consider as you make your plans, including talking with family members and incorporating ADA Compliance and Universal Design in the remodeling process.

If you’re planning for the future for yourself or a relative, you’ve probably considered “aging in place.” If you haven’t yet started making plans, you’re not alone! Most Americans don’t. Keep in mind that the National Aging in Place Council suggests that people should start thinking about a plan to age in place before planning for retirement.

What is aging in place?
Aging in place is the ability to stay in your own home independently, safely and comfortably for as long as you can while you age. A recent AARP study established that 89 percent of 50-plus Americans intend to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. If you or a relative fit this profile, then a room addition might be the right answer.

How room additions can help.
Sometimes a home layout just isn’t suitable for aging in place and room additions make the most sense. For instance, if all the bedrooms are upstairs, that can present a challenge to safe mobility. One floor living is generally considered the ideal option for aging seniors. A room addition could be as simple as a bedroom, or it could include an entire suite with a more expansive living area, a bathroom, even a small kitchenette. Any plans should include universal design elements that provide ease of use and safety. Room additions with easy access to the outdoors, such as ramps, are another way to enhance ongoing independence.

Plan early.
Living independently is the ideal for the majority of seniors, and room additions can be a good solution. If we wait too long to consider our options, circumstances can interfere which make it difficult to retain our independence. Planning for the future now is the smartest way to go!
