DoorIf you appreciate the rustic beauty and authentic charm of designs inspired by Old World Mexico, why not start with the Mexican hacienda as inspiration for your whole home remodel? Our professional design team finds imaginative ways to weave Old World allure with the needs of the modern homeowner.

Our team designed a secluded weekend getaway in the mountains as a future retirement home. Our clients’ spacious 3,300 sq. ft. adobe house sits on over an acre of land, providing the owners with privacy, comfort and a retreat from the sometimes hurried pace of everyday living in their primary home by the coast. These are a few of the elements our professional designers selected to create the mood of a Mexican hacienda:

  • A fountain imported from Mexico is adorned with handcrafted detailing and conveys earthy warmth and authenticity in the expansiveFountain outdoor patio area.
  • Three hand-carved doors made in 1910 were shipped to the adobe from Mexico. Each weighing several hundred pounds, the doors establish a sense of history and graceful substance in the home.
  • Throughout the home, each material and fabric was meticulously selected to sustain a mood of relaxation and serenity inspired by a Mexican hacienda.

pillowAfter working with our unified team of architects, designers and construction professionals for their whole home remodel, the owners of this distinctive adobe house can now enjoy the lifestyle they have always imagined.

Far from the Factory: Industrial Style for Your Whole Home Remodel

Bookshelves

Industrial elements such as brick, metal, concrete and Edison-style bulbs are primary tools in a recently revived trend that blends raw materials, beautiful woods and bold colors for a compelling balance of strength and comfort. In a library/office we designed as part of a whole home remodel, the reclaimed wood shelves are anchored by threaded iron rods and nuts. A corner column with custom chalkboard wallpaper establishes a visual foundation for the multilevel bookshelves. The new stairway is created from iron bars punctuated by reclaimed wood cubbies with painted glass backs, creating the effect of a transparent wall of art. These industrial details imaginatively meld form and function.

EdisonLightsIndustrial elements to consider for your whole home remodel:

  • Materials: brick, metal, concrete, distressed wide plank wood floors, recycled or salvaged materials
  • Lighting: Edison bulbs, caged pendants, oversized globes with metallic accents
  • Furniture and accessories: Vintage file cabinets used as imaginative storage, vintage stools, chairs and tables with rustic metallic tones, especially paired with rough-hewn, natural woods

If you are drawn to an industrial look for your whole home remodel, a professional team of designers can help you achieve an industrial aesthetic in a way that expresses your unique personal vision for your home.

A Well-Defined Dining Area in Your Whole Home Remodel Makes Family Meals and Entertaining a Delight

When you entertain during holidays and special occasions, a well-defined dining area brings a joyful spirit of family togetherness and conviviality to your home. For this whole home remodel in La Jolla, our professional design team carefully planned the dining area within the large open expanse of the home’s middle level to establish its own distinct space.

Today’s homes often feature an abundance of open space. A thoughtful whole home remodel focuses on establishing distinct areas within the open space to create a sense of place. Here are some examples of how our designers balance visual unity in an expansive area:

Coffered Ceilings: Elegant molding details in a coffered ceiling visually define the space below.

Lighting: Choosing different types and shapes of lighting such as chandeliers, pendants and wall sconces provides visual punctuation for space and also allows for flexibility when setting moods for different events.

Custom Cabinetry: A beautiful piece of cabinetry is a functional way to bring definition to a space. In this dining room, the custom-built dark cherry storage cabinet serves as a backdrop for the dining table while also offering generous storage and display areas.

Windows: The shape, length and placement of windows are essential to establishing distinct areas in a large space.

Working with a unified team of architects, designers and construction professionals, you can explore the many imaginative ways a whole home remodel brings more function and pleasure to your special occasions.

A Home for Your Best Friend(s): Making Your Whole Home Remodel Pet-Friendly

When your family includes members of the feline or canine variety, a united team of architects, designers and construction professionals can help you plan for a whole home remodel that is comfortable, welcoming and safe for your pets. If you are a homeowner with furry friends, here are some options to consider when planning your whole home remodel:

Pet Bath: For a whole home remodel we recently completed, the clients asked for a custom designed sink area in the laundry room (pictured above) to easily bathe their three small dogs who enter through a doggie door we built-in to the wall. We chose an extra deep sink along with materials that are durable, easy to maintain and harmonious with the progressive vintage aesthetic of the home’s design.

Trash Storage: In a multiple award-winning kitchen we designed, the clients’ active dog, Peanut, necessitated well-planned trash storage. An imaginative treatment by Rev-A-Shelf keeps trash and recycling organized and hidden and keeps Peanut out of trouble!

Landscaping: In addition to choosing plants and grass that will stand up to heavy use by your pets, work with a landscaping expert to be sure that all the plants in your yard are free of toxins that might harm your pets. If you have a fence around your yard, you will want to ensure that the fence is high enough to keep pets safe and dogs undistracted by passers-by.

When planning your whole home remodel, a professional design team offers a depth of knowledge and variety of creative ideas for how to make your pets as much at home in your new environment as you are!

Looking for More Space in Your Guest Bathroom? This Innovative Solution Opens the Door to Shared Privacy.

For clients with an affinity for Asian-inspired design, the remodel of a guest bathroom was inspired by a desire for both beautiful surroundings and practical functionality. The clients wanted to make the room easier to share when more than one guest needed to use it. They were looking for a custom bathroom design in which one person could use the shower while another used the sink.

Our professional design team developed a solution that added a “wall” without making the room seem smaller. A closet door was custom designed to include a buried track in the ceiling and floor with a function that allows the door to open in 3 stages for varying degrees of privacy. Obscure glass with coated aluminum trim was designed to resemble a Shoji screen-style door in keeping with the Asian-inspired aesthetic.

Throughout the room, simple horizontal lines underline the Asian influence. A quartet of lights at the vanity resembles a string of paper lanterns while the sink faucets are designed to flow like delicate waterfalls. In the shower, the waterfall theme is repeated in the niche of glass tile and the flowing lines of tile on the floor.

Are you looking for ways to harmonize luxury and function in your home? A unified team of architects, designers and construction professionals can help you with imaginative ways to transform your home and lifestyle!

Wall-to-Wall Style for Your Whole Home Remodel: Decorative Wallpaper Transforms a Room

If bland design “drives you up the wall”, you may be attracted to innovative decorative wallpapers for your whole home remodel. Our professional design team recently helped a young couple in Solana Beach choose and place an array of decorative wallpapers for their whole home remodel. In the downstairs guest bedroom, a wall depicts a restful scene of palm trees swaying on a beach. An upstairs hallway features a dramatic panorama of a sunset and sweeping waves, entitled “Undertow.” In the master bedroom, the clients chose a serene abstract of snow-laden pines. In an upstairs guest bedroom, the wall sparkles with a sun-speckled Oregon forest scene, while in a downstairs office, a gritty scene of a Brooklyn Bridge wall creates an urban, edgy mood. (Steve Ellis designed the Undertow wallpaper and Boone Speed designed the wallpapers used in all the other rooms in our clients’ home.)

For this project, our design team chose to work with Brooklyn-based Flavor Paper. Digital Flavor Paper is printed to order based on your particular wall dimensions and the image is then scaled and cropped appropriately. Flavor Paper’s special techniques ensure zero pixelation at any size. Their collection includes the work of independent artists, featuring stunning photography, illustrations, abstract work, and combinations of all three.

This inventive design solution is just one example of how working with a united team of architects, designers and construction professionals gives you access the latest ideas in home design for your whole home remodel.

There’s a Pattern Here: How to Use Chevron and Other Patterns in Your Whole Home Design

February 7th, 2013
Posted in Art and Decorating, Design, Whole Home Remodel | Comments Off

Seen as early as 1800 BC in pottery design and a common element of early military insignia, the chevron pattern has experienced a resurgence of popularity lately along with other bold patterns in home design. The chevron can be seen as a series of “zig zags” or as a wave-like effect with pointed edges instead of soft ones. For your whole home remodel, employing patterns strategically can bring immediate interest and personality to your space. Professional designers are adept at helping you select from the exciting range of possibilities to find the pattern that best expresses your unique point of view. Besides the chevron pattern, here are some other pattern choices to consider as you make plans for your whole home remodel:

Animal Prints: One bold animal print piece in a room adds a wild amount of style to your space. Choose from the bold and graphic simplicity of the zebra print or the warmer option of cheetah or tiger.

Touchable Textures: The tactile element of suede and wood materials used in your home combines interesting visual patterns found in nature with the comfort of authentic textures.

Bold Graphic Patterns: Bold modern expression comes alive with houndstooth, stripes, squares, the Greek key, and other patterns based on geometric principles.

Modern Florals: The new florals retain their romance but with the extra excitement of a large scale often in combination with a historic botanical look.

Natural inspiration:  In addition to florals, nature’s patterns can be found in fern and other plant patterns. More whimsically, faux bois (imitating the look of wood) is a fun way to play with design inspired by nature.

When you work with a unified team of architects, designers and construction professionals, your dreams for transforming your home come to life in each detail, including the bold and beautiful patterns you choose to live with everyday!

We are delighted to see more appearances of bold, over-scaled, dramatic patterns. Used in wall coverings, fabrics, lighting and home accessories, these graphic patterns are a refreshing way to bring individual personality to a space.

Grey stains and paints are one of the newest cabinetry trends. Grey is a wonderfully versatile color, working in almost any design environment from traditional to contemporary. It’s also a practical choice as it hides fingerprints and smudges much more easily than white cabinetry.

Industrial elements such as Brick, Metal, Concrete and Edison-style bulbs are primary tools in an aesthetic we are seeing more of lately that blends raw materials, beautiful woods and bold colors for a compelling balance of strength and comfort.

Each client’s personality and lifestyle in response to nature and the surrounding community makes its own trend and I believe in expressing each client’s story in their home design. But if I were going to pick one trend for 2013 it would be the continuation of sustainable green design with an emphasis on renewable materials, reclaimed objects, local products, wastewater treatment and energy efficiency.

We are breaking away from the neutral tones of recent years to a generous use of bold color! You will see Coral, Yellow, Blue and Emerald Green in tile, paint, furniture, bedding and more. Still, it’s important to consider if this trend communicates what you want. We see clients becoming braver in designing their home spaces as a reflection of their personalities and that is a trend in itself!

Dramatic patterns will arise in abundance, specifically the “chevron” pattern which will be seen in wallpaper, tile, furniture, textiles and flooring. Most common in alternating black and white, the chevron pattern appears with subtlety in neutral colors for a look that leans more toward the serene.

Rustic and reclaimed woods surged in popularity with the growing awareness of sustainability and green design. Natural materials have now become even more favored because of the “homey” sense they bring to a space. An accent of vintage wood can bring warmth to contemporary designs, along with “found objects” such as antlers, vintage cameras, logs, clocks and other items that look as if they’ve been found either in nature or in Grandma’s attic.

Luxurious shower experiences are becoming even more stimulating with a variety of integrated options. Exciting choices include digital valve controls with pre-set his and her temperatures, wireless speaker showerheads to enliven the shower with your favorite music, or an LED rain showerhead that mounts to the ceiling and self-generates lighting with hydropower from the water flow.

Wall coverings are being used quite a bit recently in interiors. Manufacturers of wallpaper and decorative wall paneling are designing many new alternatives with a fresh perspective and clients are responding with enthusiasm. The choices for colors and patterns present endless possibilities for the focal point of a room.

Modern and clean design using minimalistic straight lines continues to gain in popularity but now it is being balanced by the use of reclaimed, recycled and natural looking materials.

Metallics and transparencies are trending as a way to bring contemporary luxury to any room. We have started to see more options for metallic finish pieces in lighting fixtures, accessories and furniture, especially gold and silver finishes.  Lucite, acrylic, and other clear materials are showing up in lighting and furniture, supporting a clutter-free, modern and clean appearance.
