Before/After Tour: Coastal Home with Sunset Cliffs View

The location of this coastal home was a dream for a young professional couple who always knew they wanted to live in the Sunset Cliffs neighborhood someday. The existing house was much too small for their plans to start a family and welcome out-of-town visitors. After an expansive whole home remodel, the home now encompasses 4 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, and abundant space to share with friends and family. Sea and sun-inspired hues are prominent in an open and airy interior that captures fresh ocean air and natural light on every level. The transitional design extends to several outdoor living spaces with views of Sunset Cliffs. The exterior architecture of the home reflects both Craftsman and Asian-inspired influences.

Due to coastal restrictions and the slope leading up to the front of the home, all the addition of square footage needed to be on the back of the home. The slope and grading of the driveway and associated drainage challenged designers to creative solutions for dramatically transforming the front exterior of the home while keeping the garage and front door in their existing locations.

The bold new exterior balances the wife’s affinity for Craftsman-inspired design and the husband’s preference for a more modern look and feel. The roof’s low pitch reflects Craftsman elements while the metal used to build it gives it a more modern look. The entryway with the pillar columns and pitched roof is an Asian design influence inspired by the wife’s heritage. Natural wood elements, an exaggerated entry, and grid windows communicate a custom aesthetic.

The interior of the existing home was bland. The clients wanted to live with comfortable and stylish design for a modern family. The new entryway dazzles with soft coastal hues and meticulous details like the herringbone pattern on the flooring. The glow from the striking lighting can be seen from the street at night through the large transom window which also lets ample natural light in. An inviting bench with a backdrop of textured wallpaper sets the stage for the home’s welcoming environment.

“Seaside Allure” Kitchen

The existing kitchen had high quality cabinetry that was salvaged and donated. The clients desired a brighter kitchen with a more modern “white on white on white” look. The new design integrates some elements of blue, gray, and natural wood to bring character to the space. The hand-scraped European Oak flooring and quartz countertops are ideal for a home with young children, allowing for wear and tear. A large wine refrigerator was selected specifically to accommodate the clients’ appreciation of wine and champagne.

Cabinetry with molding details is balanced with the texture of the backsplash to create a white on white design with warmth and depth. The extra large island with a custom walnut stain, cleverly conceals multiple outlets. The lighting makes an artistic statement with the soft gleam of metal.

Coastal View Living Space

The existing home boasted an amazing ocean view but the design did not fully take advantage of its stunning location. The living area was pushed out toward the back deck, now redesigned as an elegant outdoor living space, and the ocean view while niches with windows add more light and character. A glass door with multiple sliding panels and high windows with retractable screens allow for maximum flexibility in controlling sun, shade, and circulation. Dark beams now add definition. The unique fireplace, created with a random mix of printed porcelain tiles, feels like a piece of art.

A custom louvered roof over one of the home’s decks integrates lighting and heating to accommodate relaxing and entertaining in any weather, day or night. The new deck, also pushed out along with the living room, now connects the living space to the primary suite.

Luxurious Primary Suite

In the existing primary bedroom, the view was still stellar but the design itself was outdated and ordinary. The clients wanted a cozy and stylish retreat for true relaxation. Now significantly increased in square footage and connected to a spacious outdoor living space, the primary suite embraces its coastal location by using as many windows as possible on the wall facing the sea. While looking out on a stunning vista of blue sky and ocean, the bedroom’s serene blue and artistic detailing retain a spirit of coziness and comfort.

The existing bathroom was dark, dated and felt cramped. The clients desired a space with maximum brightness and light. The organic warmth of bamboo cabinetry and the rich dark appearance of the tile flooring perfectly balances with the emphasis on white and bright in the new design. A herringbone inset surrounding the tub, and sculptural lighting above, underlines the overall sense of serenity. Symmetry is prominent in the design while towel warmers and a heated floor add luxurious pampering. Through the mirrored door is a large walk-in closet with a dumbwaiter to send laundry downstairs to the laundry room.

With space for a future pool accommodated, the expansive outdoor space welcomes family playtime and relaxing to enjoy spectacular views. After working with our expert team of architects, designers, and construction professionals, the clients can now enjoy their breathtaking home for a lifetime.
