The Setting: A Home Immersed in the Landscape

Set high above the ocean’s edge, the property occupies one of San Diego’s most breathtaking vantage points. Sunset Cliffs is known for its sculpted sandstone formations, dynamic tides, and uninterrupted coastal horizon. This home is designed to take full advantage of that rare perspective. The architecture orients every major space toward the water, allowing shifting light and seasonal breezes to animate daily life.

Exterior materials echo the tones and textures of the coastline, featuring smooth stucco reminiscent of sun-bleached stone, warm wood accents evoking driftwood, and dark metal roofing that grounds the form against the sky.

The Architectural Transformation

From Fragmented Footprint to Fluid Coastal Living

Before its transformation, the home lacked cohesion. The rooms felt isolated, natural light was limited, and the spectacular ocean views were only partially realized. JDR’s architecture team re-envisioned the structure with a singular objective: create a harmonious flow from space to space while allowing the landscape to become an integral part of daily experience.

A New Framework for Family Living

We removed walls, raised volumes, and reimagined circulation to support an open, intuitive layout. The main living pavilion now soars with vaulted ceilings and exposed beams, orchestrating a grand yet inviting sense of scale. Strategic placement of clerestory windows introduces soft, ambient light throughout the day, ensuring the home remains bright and serene during the marine layer’s quiet mornings.

When the Outside Moves In

Multi-panel sliding glass doors dissolve entire walls, allowing sea breezes and coastal views to animate the interior spaces. Each terrace, both upper and lower, acts as an architectural extension of the home, creating layered outdoor rooms that feel like fully realized living environments rather than accessories.
